 What is SDSL?

Written by: DirectGlobal USA - Dec 3, 2008

SDSL stands for "Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line" also known as Single-line DSL. SDSL is an "always on" connection that can service both voice and data services and needs just one twisted pair (line) and being "symmetric" (The use of a single twisted pair limits the operating range of SDSL to 10,000 feet or 3048.8 meters). SDSL supplies equal data bandwidth rates both "upstream" and "downstream" and works by sending digital pulses within the high-frequency area of telephone wires. This enables service providers to reach a large number of subscribers with a variety of data rates. (SDSL supports data rates up to 3 Mbps but speeds are usually closer to 1.544 Mbps).

SDSL and Voice Over Data SDSL is a low latency technology and is ideally suited for Voice over Data applications such as Voice over IP and Voice over ATM.

SDSL can also transport a mix of traditional 64Kbps voice channels and data. This enables SDSL to address the business needs of both voice and data connectivity.
